An incredibly packed weekend we have here folks. The beauty of it all is that there's alot of gems in this one.
An American Carol is quite good in concept, but haven't seen any trailers or posters or anything really about it. Look for it to flop big time.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua is the proud owner of the most annoying trailer ever and also the recipient of the 'never-ending trailer' award, a rare double feat in these troubled times. But kids love this shit, so they'll go to it in droves.
I really hope Blindness does well. Fantastic script, has my niggerette Julianne Moore, and fellow chink Sandra Oh in the most awkward trailer appearance ever. Alot of great buzz surrounding this, and Jules never disappoints, I definietly hope to catch this one.
Flash of Genius is another huge gem. It has Greg Kinnear who's been slowly developing quite the career for himself. After countless years in great supporting roles, he's finally taking the limelight and doing a great job at it, unlike other people (I'm looking at you Rainn Wilson). Great true story, alot of buzz, but quite unfortunate that I haven't seen the trailer attached to anything. Look for it to not do too well this weekend.
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is a bit of an odd one. I haven't seen a trailer, barely saw a glimpse of a poster, yet i'm still fairly intrigued by this... almost enough to make me see it (but not quite). Very funky style of advertising, definietly will appeal to the teen crowd, will probably do gangbusters.
This week's disappointment? Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. When I first heard of this I was over the moon with delight. Great comedic actor, nifty little script concept, an actress that'll do a good job at looking good, what could go wrong? Let's see....
- Ripoff of Juno-style marketing
- Writer is a good friend of Diablo Cody, so at least some implicit inspiration is at play
- after giving it more thought, do we REALLY need to see Michael Cera in his 200th shy/geek role?
So after initially having insurmountable expectations, they've hit near rock bottom, and i'll likely be avoiding this like the plague. Unfortunately, alot of dumb kids love copycat flicks, so this will do great, and then we'll see Michael Cera in ANOTHER shy/geek role soon after :-(
Rachel Getting Married is one flick i've been looking forward to for MONTHS. Much like Greg Kinnear, Anne Hathaway has been doing incredibly well in supporting roles but not really getting the publicity that her talents deserve, unlike other people (I'm looking at you Rainn Wilson). The buzz surrounding her leading performance in this flick is off the charts and i'm eager to see how my wiggerette does in this. Unfortunately haven't seen a trailer, nor any posters, so I can only hope that other audience members are aware of this little gem.
Religulous is a bit of a write off. I don't really like Bill Maher. I liked the overall concept of his television show, but his actual style and personality puts me off a bit. Whenever I look at him I just get that sensation that he's a swarmy guy, who rigs situations / guest appearances to his own personal benefit. My ESP-abilities are confirmed in this movie which is another step down for the Documentary genre at large. The trailer is fairly lame, buzz is that he only chooses situations/guests that he can decimate, where's the real joy in that? But then again there is a greater joy in seeing religious people being taken down a notch. I may find myself watching this one but too ashamed to admit it.
