1) RocknRolla. Prediction = $21.5 million.
2) Body of Lies. Prediction = $7.2 million.
3) City of Ember. Prediction = $17.4 million.
4) The Express. Prediction = $9.3 million.
5) Quarantine. Prediction = $12.2 million.
RocknRolla was actually released on Wednesday, so the weekend haul may not be all that impressive. What is definietly impressive however is the movie itself. I went to an advanced screening a while back, first Guy Ritchie film i've ever seen, and was blown away at how good the movie is, considering that this is the same guy who made Swept Away. A great film, safe bet for this weekend.
Body of Lies will unfortunately be another flop for two great people. One is Ridley Scott. An endlessly talented individual, who possibly needs to reign in his talent and not let it get overboard from reality. He's unfortunately done way more misses than hits, but when he hits it's a true gem. Unfortunately this is unlikely to be a gem according to early buzz. The other unfortunate person is Russell Crowe. This guy is the master of flops and needs a hit bad. Fantastic actor thrown into horrible packages. Notice that I haven't included 'ole faithful Leo. He's had too many hits lately, so a flop will do good to keep him grounded, and he'll be redeeming himself quite shortly. A horribly confusing trailer doesn't help bring crowds into this either. It could be a huge hit, but only because people thought it'd be good.
City of Ember will be a monster this weekend. Mediocre trailer, but it does showcase what a beautiful film it is. And of course it has Bill Murray who, unlike the forementioned individuals, hasn't done a bad role in years. He delivers the goods, and early buzz is that he delivers them again here.
I hope The Express crashes and burns. That'll help bring an end to the stupid inspirational sports genre, and also help out with things in the political arena. Look for the media to endlessly create links between this film and Obama (who is a half white Muslim need I remind you, don't get me started). Now if the film becomes a blockbuster hit..... oh boy. We won't hear the end of it.
I have mixed feelings towards Quarantine. On one hand it seems like a pretty decent flick. Great concept, great trailer, seems good for a little break from reality. On the other hand, it's a dangerous expansion of the 'handycam' film genre. Do we REALLY want more of these movies? How soon before we get the theatrical re-release of the Paris Hilton sex tape? We're walking down a dark alleyway my friends.
