Another messed up weekend full of wide and small releases. I'll try to reference only the big ones, and again hopefully reference the small ones later when they go wide (which i always forget)
1) High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Prediction = $35.8 million.
2) Pride and Glory. Prediction = $9.4 million.
3) Saw V. Prediction = $16.8 million.
4) Changeling. Prediction = $14.7 million.
5) Passengers. Prediction = $5.8 million.
If there's one movie that can shatter The Dark Knight's box office records, it's the movie known as High School Musical 3. Whereas TDK was mainly focused on people teens and adults, HSM3 sucks every single age group into it's happy-ass vortex. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any crazy ass 6 AM screening ala TDK, so no records are likely to be set. Regardless, there are a shitload of kids out there, look for this to do well.
Pride and Glory is this weekend's bomb of the weekend. Top notch cast, so by all means it should do well. But huge void of advertising, and a pretty dumpy trailer, look for this to bomb big. Which is a dire shame, especially for Edward Norton. That guy needs a hit like Whitney needs crack.
Saw V will rake in ungodly amounts of money as usual for it's miniscual production budget. It's best weekend will probably happen over Halloween.
Changeling is one of the top movie's i've been looking forward to for this year. Crappy advertisements, but fucking top notch trailer. The trailer is extremely complicated, but extremely sensible in it's delivery. A hard combination to deliver but it pulls it off magnificently. Just seeing Angelina Jolie do some crying/yelling has Oscar all over it.
Passengers will also do fairly poorly, but guessing that it cost nothing to make. Zero advertising, haven't seen a single poster or trailer for this one. Sounds pretty interesting though, and it has one of my favorite actresses, Anne Hathaway, in it. A subtle bomb for her would be good for her ego.
