People are frustratingly stupid.
1) Burn After Reading. Prediction = $23.8 million. Result = $19.1 million.
2) Righteous Kill. Prediction = $9.2 million. Result = $16.3 million.
3) Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys. Prediction = $11.3 million. Result = $17.4 million.
4) The Women. Prediction = $15.8 million. $10.1 million.
Burn After Reading had a seemingly low intake, but remember this is an arthouse / indie flick. People under 60 are really into these sorta films, and people over 60 are dying off quick these days, so it did stunningly well for such a film, especially in these desperate times. Considering it's meagre budget of $37 million, it will do fantastically well during it's run (not to say anything about the Oscars though).
So why are people so stupid? Apparently stupid enough to give a P.O.S. film like Righteous Kill $16.3 million of their hard earned money. Blatant attempt at a cash grab, and people fell for it hook-line-and-sinker. I've read tons of message board posts and conversations elsewhere that all went like:
"Oh, have you heard of that new movie with De Niro and Alpa Chino?"
"No, but weren't they in some other movie before? Heat?"
"Yeah, I think it was Heat. Did you see it?"
"No, did you?"
"No, but I heard it was awesome."
"Yeah, me too, therefor this new movie must be awesome as well!"
"LET'S GO SPEND $16.3 MILLION AND SEE IT!"
Un-fucking-believable. Congraduations people. We just gave a huge one more reason for the Hollywood system to be pumping out more shit like this. Next up: Martin Scorsese, Carrot Top, and Chris Tucker.
Tyler Perry did very well, as I should've realized. No surprises here.
The Women did extremely well. Yeah, $10 million is peanuts, but the movie only cost $16 million to make, so anything after next week is pure profit, and chicks ain't going no where fast.
Still can't believe how many people saw Righteous Kill.
